Cowan Select Horses, LLC is based in North Central Montana in the heart of the Bear Paw Mountains and runs in conjunction with Cowan & Son Ranch.

The ranch was established in 1888 and has always been managed by the Cowan family. Bill and Barbara Cowan’s daughter Lisa, along with her husband Brett Huestis, is the sixth generation to manage this sizeable commercial cow, calf, yearling and Quarter Horse operation.  

Our horses are used in everyday work on the ranch; health checking, pasture doctoring, dragging calves to the branding fire, sorting and trailing cattle, etc.  We live in a beautiful area with many extremes in both climate and terrain which in turn lends a hand in raising strong, sure-footed and good boned horses.  

Cowan Select Horses, LLC currently runs a diverse band of broodmares from different disciplines and breeding. All of our mares have been ridden extensively and proven themselves as either a ranch or performance horse prior to joining our broodmare band. Many of our mares have a performance record. Foaling of our mares takes place in either our indoor foaling barn or open broodmare barn depending on the Montana climate. Ground work for the foals is undertaken by Cowan Select ranch hand, Amy Iddings.

Montana division manager and trainer Zach Iddings, along with trainer Jordan Bayles, currently completes all colt training for the herd. The colts are started in our indoor arena during the winter months and are brought back in early summer after our calving season finishes. Our young geldings are raised to be ranch horses for Cowan & Son cowboys and may eventually be offered for sale as an experienced ranch horse. While many of our fillies are offered for sale at a younger age, they are raised and used for ranch work the same as our geldings. These horses are sale prepped in our stall barn adjacent to our indoor arena. Ranch hand Kelley Nash assists with any sale preparations, performs daily herd checks, and supplies supplemental feed as needed, among many other tasks.

The Montana division of Cowan Select Horses is also complemented by our Oklahoma division; Cowan Select Horses LLC at Windward Stud. Windward Stud is managed by Frank and Robin Merrill and predominately breeds, trains and campaigns cutting performance horses.
